Resort Condominiums International (RCI) is widely recognized as a leader in timeshare exchange. Founded in 1974 as an exchange service for timeshare condominium owners, RCI created a way to inject some travel options into the static, weeks-based timeshare industry. Technically, you can’t sell RCI timeshare because RCI does not own resorts and, therefore, does not have timeshare to sell. Because many owners only know about their timeshare through RCI because of the way they use the exchange system, they think they own an RCI timeshare and can sell it. The reality is that RCI has created a network of affiliated resorts and the owner owns a deeded interest in a timeshare at a home resort within that network (even if they own RCI points). They need to find out at which resort they own before they can sell their timeshare.
Because the resort is an RCI affiliate, an owner can seemingly sell RCI affiliated timeshare, which is why it gets confusing. The best way to find out what you own is to check your deed or purchase and sale agreement, or call RCI and ask them what you own.
